Police say a 34-year-old woman was arrested for driving under the influence after being involved in an accident on Jefferson Road near Constitution Ave. last week.
Columbia Township Police Chief David Elwell said that on Saturday, March 25 at approximately 12:55 a.m. officers from the fire and police departments (rescue) were dispatched to the personal injury accident.
Arriving personnel found a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado resting against a tree, heavily damaged, with air-bags deployed. The truck was driven by the 34-year-old female. A 25-year-old female passenger was in the front seat, and two children, ages 8 and 10, were in the back seat. All occupants were wearing seatbelts. The two minors are children of the driver.
Injuries were minor, said the chief, and none of the occupants were transported for medical treatment.
The driver was eastbound on Jefferson Road, and went partially onto the shoulder, overcorrected, crossed the centerline and left the roadway on the north side of Jefferson Road, striking the large tree head-on. The airbags were deployed.
Elwell said officers were suspicious that the driver was intoxicated, which was confirmed with field sobriety and a PBT test. The driver, of Britton, Mich., was arrested and charged with operating with high blood alcohol content, and operating while intoxicated with an occupant less than 16.
She was lodged at the Jackson County Jail, and has not yet been arraigned. The children (and adult passenger) were picked up by a sober relative of the passenger, at the mother’s request. A referral was made to Children’s Protective Services.
